In Pictures: Deserted streets on August 15
Srinagar: Streets on August 15, the Independence Day of India, remained deserted and armed forces could be seen patrolling Lal Chowk, while force deployment could be seen across the city.
Shops around the market were closed. Lal Chowk usually remains shut on a Sunday.
The Admin earlier had ordered schools and government employees to show participation in the official August 15 functions by hoisting flags and playing the Indian national anthem. Institutes have been told to record videos of the same and upload it on the government website.
“Our participation is held mandatory by the government. We have to also make a video of the flag hoisting and upload it,” a government school teacher told Free Press Kashmir.
The government has installed lighting at the Ghanta Ghar to illuminate it in the colours the Indian National Flag. Ghanta Ghar holds a symbolic value in the politics of the region.
Massive Indian National flags have been hoisted in the centre of downtown on the Hari Parbat hill, and in Gulmarg.
