India reports highest single-day spike of COVID infections in nearly 2 months
New Delhi: With 46,759 COVID cases reported in 24 hours in India, the country’s daily numbers jumped by over four percent.
The jump was witnessed most in nearly two months, as cases surge in Kerala. The country also reported 509 deaths during the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry of India said.
Kerala contributed 32,801 cases in the past 24 hours to take the total number of those affected in the state by the viral infection to 38,14,305.
The southern state has been reporting over 30,000 cases for three days now. Kerala’s positivity rate currently stands at 19.22 percent, an increase from 18.03 on August 26.
Maharashtra, the state with the highest overall caseload, reported 4,654 new infections and 170 fatalities in 24 hours. Maharashtra’s COVID recovery rate stands at 97.02 percent, while the fatality rate is 2.12 percent.
No virus-related death was recorded in Delhi on Friday, while 46 fresh cases were reported with a positivity rate of 0.06 percent, according to the city’s health department.
This is the 17th time since the starting of the second wave of the pandemic in the capital that zero fatality has been logged in a day.
The Delta variant of the virus that causes COVID doubles the risk of hospitalization compared to the Alpha variant it has supplanted as the dominant strain worldwide, according to research.
Only 1.8 percent of the more than 43,000 Covid cases assessed in comparing the two variants were in patients who had been fully vaccinated, researchers in The Lancet have said.
