NIA raids houses of political activists in south Kashmir

Srinagar: National Investigation Agency (NIA) of India carried out searches at the houses of political activists and some government employees in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Thursday morning.

Sources said that sleuths of NIA assisted by Para-military troopers and Jammu and Kashmir Police raided multiple houses in Wachi area of Zainpora Shopian.

They added that houses of Peoples Democratic Party, National Conference and Jamat-e-Islami activists were raided and searches were conducted subsequently.

People whose houses were searched include Muhammad Shafi Shah, a private teacher and JeI activist, Shahid Ahmed Shah, a private employee, Riyaz Ahmed Mir, a government employee at Sheep Husbandry Department, Muhammad Shaban Kumar, a PDP activist and President local Auqaf Committee and Muhammad Latif Shah-an NC activist and a carpenter by profession.

The searches were in progress till the filing of this report. Reports added that some arrests have also been made by the probing agency of India.

Pertinently, a few days ago, NIA raided the office of renowned human rights defender Khurram Parvez and booked him under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act-a a move that has widely been criticized at the international level. (KNT)
