Gawkadal massacre: Srinagar Mayor expresses solidarity with victims’ families

Srinagar: Maisuma and adjacent parts of Srinagar city on Friday observed a shutdown to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the Gawkadal massacre.

Pertinently, on this day (21 January) 1990, scores of people were killed after Para-military troopers opened fire on protesters in Gawkadal area of Srinagar city.

Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu expressed sympathies with the families whose beloved were killed in this massacre.

In a tweet, Srinagar Mayor said: “Today is the 32nd anniversary of another dark chapter in our history – the nightmare of Gawkadal on 21st January 1990.”

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims who lost their lives,” he wrote on Twitter and added that 32 years have passed and justice is still awaited. (KNT)
