Ladakh witnesses steep surge in COVID cases, reports 1,515 infections in last 14 days

Leh: With the situation growing grim, the cold desert Ladakh in the last 14 days reported a total of 1,515 cases with 763 recoveries and a single death while the active cases have gone up to 1020 as of Thursday in the region.

The COVID situation in Ladakh started to worsen after the region in late December started to register cases in twin districts.

The region reported a total of 1,515 cases with 763 recoveries and a single death while the active cases have gone up to 1020 compared to 269 active cases on January 6 this month.

Ladakh comprising two districts including Leh and Kargil is witnessing a sharp rise in the COVID cases with Leh most affected due to the virus.

According to the figures, the twin districts of Ladakh registered a total of 1,515  cases with 763 recoveries and a single death while the active cases have gone up to 1020 as of Thursday in the region.

Of these COVID positive cases, 616 cases were reported in Leh alone and 140 in Kargil in the first 19 days of the ensuing year with only one death due to the virus.

The figures reveal the region has reported a total of 23885 cases so far of which 988 were reported in Kargil and 19897 in Leh district alone while the total active cases have come home up to 1020 which comprise 848 in Leh and 172 in Kargil district.

The positivity rate in the region has witnessed a sharp spike and gone up to 4.3 per cent on January 19 while the district-wise break up is 4.3 per cent in both Kargil and Leh districts, reveal the figures.

Figures reveal that the recovery rate in the region has come to 94.8 per cent percent with a 94.9 per cent recovery rate in Leh where a total of 18885 patients have recovered while 3758 patients have recovered in Kargil taking the rate to 94.2 per cent in the district.

About the death rate in the region, figures reveal that a total of 222 COVID positive patients have died due to the virus in Ladakh of which 164 are from Leh alone taking the overall fatality rate in the district to 0.82 per cent and 1.5 per cent in the Kargil district where 58 patients have died so far with regions overall percentage maintained at 0.93 per cent.

The figures reveal that the total positivity rate in the Union Territory of Ladakh has gone up to 3.8 percent and the twin districts comprising Leh and Kargil with 5.3 percent and 1.6 percent of positivity rate.

The figures also reveal that a total of 6,20,452 tests have been done in the region so far.

Notably, the authorities in the union territory of Ladakh have enhanced containment measures to stop the further spread of the virus in the region with different measures including not allowing the gatherings that would lead to transmission.
