Kashmiri student in Bangladesh attempts to kill self after college suspends him following brawl with local student
‘The suspension was revoked after the student’s suicide attempt followed by protests’
A Kashmiri student studying at International Medical College in Dhaka, Bangladesh attempted suicide on Thursday after he was suspended from his college for six months.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the Kashmiri students who along with many others had gathered in the college premises to protest against the management, told Free Press Kashmir that the student was suspended following a brawl during a football match that was played between the Kashmiri and the local Bangladeshi students on December 16, 2021.
During the match, there were some issues between the two students which had turned into an exchange of verbal duels among them. The issues were sorted soon after the match ended, the student said.
On January 26, 2022, the college management issued a notice to the Kashmir student suspending him for six months and barring him from appearing in the examinations, the student told Free Press Kashmir.
However, the college management only suspended the Kashmiri student but not the local student of Bangladesh.
He further said that the Kashmiri student had tried to attempt suicide twice after his suspension and was fortunately saved by his roommates at the college.
He added that the Kashmiri students approached the college authority over the suspension and pleaded with them to take back the decision but they didn’t pay any attention to their requests.
According to him, Kashmiri students in the college are being mistreated as earlier local students brought many outsiders to beat Kashmiris.
“This is how we have been treated here,” the student alleged. However, after the strong protests by the Kashmiri students, the college management revoked the suspension order.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Medical Student’s Association in its tweet said, “In our hearing During a football match between Kashmiri students studying in Bangladesh and the local Bangladeshi students, a small verbal exchange turned violent. In response, the college administration punished only an Indian student barring him from appearing in examinations for 6 months. The victim tried to commit suicide but was fortunately saved by his friends. We are requesting our respected @ihcdhaka and concern International Medical college to solve this matter on humanitarian ground,”(sic).
Earlier this month, a Kashmiri girl student Seema Zehra, daughter of Ghulam Mohammad, a resident of Budgam district died in mysterious circumstances in Bangladesh.
The deceased was pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at Ad-din Sakina Medical College Jessore in Bangladesh and was in her second year. The actual cause of her death is being ascertained.
