Craft struggling to survive: Making of a Karakulli cap

Karakulli cap and the craft of making it has come to Kashmir from Afghanistan via Silk Route almost three centuries back. Since then Karakulli has been hosted with a special place in Kashmiri culture especially for bridegrooms.

With transitions in time, the evolution in the design of Karakulli and its craft were inevitable in accordance to the fashion and trends.

The journey of the ‘curls and grains’ from the womb of a ‘Karakull Lamb” to the skilled hands giving it shape and form has always had trails and tests to pass.

People associated with the craft narrate the ‘journey of Karakulli”.
