Over 70 Ukrainian soldiers killed as Russian artillery hits military base in Kharkiv
More than 70 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed after Russian artillery hit a military base in Okhtyrka, Kharkiv, the head of the region, Dmytro Zhyvytskyy, was quoted as saying by Turkish public broadcaster TRT World.
Zhyvytskyy released photos and videos which showed that multiple buildings were either destroyed or severely damaged in Okhtyrka. The city is 345 kilometres away from Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv.
On Monday, Ukraine reported a civilian death toll of 352 and later that day at least 11 people were killed by Russian strikes on Kharkiv.
The Ukrainian defense minister Oleksii Reznikov on Tuesday claimed that more than 5,710 Russian soldiers have been killed by Ukraine’s forces since the start of the invasion, but this number has not been confirmed by Russian officials.
Russia acknowledged deaths and injuries among its soldiers for the first time on Monday, but did not offer any concrete numbers and claimed that losses were “considerably lower” than what was seen in Ukrainian forces.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the European Union to prove that it sided with Ukraine in its war with Russia and a day after signing a request to join the bloc. “The EU is going to be much stronger with us, that’s for sure,” he said.
“Without you, Ukraine is going to be lonesome,” Zelensky told the European Parliament by video link. “Do prove that you are with us. Do prove that you will not let us go. Do prove that you are indeed Europeans and then life will win over death and light will win over darkness. Glory be to Ukraine,” he continued.
Also, an Indian student was killed in shelling in Ukraine this morning, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said. The student, from Karnataka’s Haveri, died when Russian soldiers blew up a government building on Tuesday.
Russian artillery attacked several residential areas in Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkiv.
More than half a million people have fled Ukraine since the start of Russia’s invasion, the UN’s refugee arm said.
