New Delhi: A total of seven petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court against the Places of Worship (Special Provision) 1991 Act by members of the Hindu community who wants the conversion of several mosques into temples across the country.

The latest petition was filed by Devkinandan Thakur, a Hindu priest who hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura, Muslim Mirror reported.

The law prohibits conversion of the character of any place of worship – except Babri Masjid – as they existed on 15 August 1947. Thus, it gives legal protection to places of worship such as Gyanvapi Mosque and Shahi Edgah.

Hindu groups are campaigning for the conversion of the aforementioned mosques as well as other monumental sites such Jamia Masjid, the Quwwat-ul-Islam Masjid inside the Qutub complex into temples, the report said. Hence, they want the top court to nullify the validity of the law.
