Nigeen lake conservation organisation to rejuvenate springs across Kashmir

Srinagar: Nigeen lake conservation organisation under mission ehsaas to start initiative for rejuvenation of springs across Kashmir valley.

NLCO Chairman Manzoor Wangnoo said that the initiative to restore dried and dead springs across Kashmir valley will be started on June 22 from Lar area of Ganderbal District in an attempt to make people realize that the springs of the valley have dried up and they need to be rejuvenated.

Addressing gathering on sidelines of reopening Zaytoon Restaurant at Kashmir Mahal Lawns, Ishber, Nishat, Wangnoo said that Springs are the primary source of water for the rural households and despite being part of a strong heritage, tradition and culture in the Kashmir Valley, the choking of these springs due to negligence of people is an alarming in the present context.

He said that there is an urgent need to restore, revive and sustain these springs and added that lack of knowledge, understanding and awareness on springs has further compounded the problem.

“We have taken initiative to restore these springs; consequently, efforts to restore them is gaining momentum as many schools like Crescent school and open birla minds school are joining us in this initiative to promote awareness of the importance of springs, and to build capacities to protect, develop and manage ‘springs’ across Kashmir Valley”, Manzoor said.

Speaking on the Occasion, former IAS Officer and Adminstrator, Khursheed Ahmad Ganie said that there was a time when women used to go to these springs carrying pots on their shoulders to fetch water from these springs but now they are totally dried and there is a need of collective efforts to restore lost glory of these springs.

The other dignitaries who were present during the re-opening of Zaytoon hotel were Dr Mushtaq, Dr Farooq Ah Kaloo, Owner of Birla minds School Gh Mohd Lone, President of Travel agents association of india, Zahoor Qari, Mohd Akram, Ajaz Naqashbandi, Former Pretty TAAK Fayaz Ahmad, Dr Shahnawaz, Editor-in-Chief Kashmir News Service Mohd Aslam Bhat and members of NLCO who also insisted upon the restoration of dried Springs in Kashmir valley.
