Muslim youth hacked to death in Karnataka, 21 detained for questioning

Bangalore: Karnataka police said on Saturday that 21 persons have been detained for questioning after a Muslim youth was brutally killed in Surathkal town of Dakshina Kannada district.

Mohammad Fazil was killed on Thursday evening and it is suspected that his death was to take revenge for the murder of Praveen Kumar Nettaru, a BJP Yuva Morcha activist, a report by news agency IANS said.

The opposition had demanded that the state government should treat the two murderers without prejudice and also charged that since the people have lost faith in the ruling BJP, they are taking the law into their hands. Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and ADGP Alok Kumar have stated that the murders have been taken seriously and police required some time to nab the accused in the two cases.

While the police have arrested 2 persons in connection with the BJP activist’s murder, they are yet to make arrests over Fazil’s killing, the news agency report said.

On Thursday, a group of men hacked Fazil to death in Karnataka’s Mangaluru district, hours after the state Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s visited the family of slain BJP activist Praveen Kumar Nettaru, police said.

Fazil is a resident of Mangalpete near Surathkal, located on the outskirts of Mangaluru.

According to police, a group of people came in a car and rushed towards Fazil, who was standing outside a clothing store owned by him, and attacked him, the report said. He was taken to hospital but he succumbed to his injuries.

Fazil was chased and brutally assaulted with lethal weapons by the miscreants. The CCTV footage of the incident which emerged has created shockwaves throughout the state.
