New Delhi: Former Vice President of India Mohammad Hamid Ansari said that Muslims in India feel they are being ill-treated and are hurt by the prejudice they face. He added that the steady weakening of secularism is endangering India’s future, Muslim Mirror reported.

In an interview with Karan Thapar for The Wire, he criticised political parties over the low representation of Muslims in politics. He said that there is a “disinclination” by parties to choose Muslims as electoral candidates.

Commenting on the low representation of Muslims in government services, he said that the responsibility lies on both sides – community and government.

He said that members of the community did not push themselves to get government jobs in the past. He further indicated that he believes “to some extent” the system is militating against Muslims getting jobs.
