Cop kills pregnant wife in JK’s Kathua, flees home to evade arrest

Kathua: In yet another shocking incident, a personnel of Jammu and Kashmir Police allegedly bludgeoned his pregnant wife to death in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday.

The accused Special Police Officer (SPO) of JK Police identified as Mohan Lal is absconding, news agency PTI reported. His house was set ablaze by some angry villagers, the report said.

The report, quoting Senior Superintendent of Police, Kathua, Ramesh Chander Kotwal, said special teams have been formed to arrest the accused.

The incident happened at Dharalta village in the Billawar area when Lal, who is posted in district police lines Kathua and was on leave for the past three days, brutally killed his wife Asha Devi (32), a mother of two daughters, following an argument over some family matter, the report said quoting officials.

The SPO fled the scene before the neighbours arrived, they said, adding some agitated people torched his house before the situation was brought under control by police.

The report quoting officials further said the woman was eight months pregnant and her baby also died in her womb.

Earlier in the day, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, who went missing on Monday, was found hanging from a tree in Hiranagar Town in Kathua.

In this regard, authorities have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the exact cause of the death, news agency ANI reported.

The report quoting police sources, said a villager saw the body of BJP leader Som Raj hanging from a tree at some distance from his house in Hiranagar town in the morning and informed the police.

The body, which had blood marks, was sent to a Sub District Hospital (SDH) Hiranagar hospital for post-mortem.

Quoting the sources further, the report said Raj was missing since Monday and was found hanging from a tree on Tuesday under mysterious circumstances.

Inquest proceedings under section 174 CrPC have been initiated by Hiranagar Police in this regard. The family members and many BJP leaders demanded a probe into his death.

After completing medical and legal formalities, the body of the deceased was handed over to legal heirs for last rites.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kathua RC Kotwal told the new agency that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by SDPO Border has been constituted to investigate the matter.

“Questioning of the leaders on whom the family has levelled allegation will also be conducted and whosoever will be found guilty will be dealt with iron hands”, the SSP was quoted as saying.
