Madrassa bulldozed in Assam, 3rd in month
Assam: A madrassa in the Bongaigaon district of Assam was demolished this week after the administration issued an order claiming that it was “structurally vulnerable and unsafe for human habitation”.
The order, issued by the office of the Bongaigaon deputy commissioner, claimed that there are insufficient provisions at the Markazul Ma-Arif Quariana Madrassa to deal with a fire or an earthquake. The campus of the institution lacks adequate open space that can be used in the event of a disaster, the administration said.
The deputy commissioner’s order cited a report from the district superintendent of police as saying that the madrassa housed 224 students, various reports said.
The administration directed the demolition of the entire structure except a mosque located in a separate area within the madrassa complex.
This is the third madrassa in the state to be destroyed this month as a result of increased operations by the Assam Police.
Earlier on Monday, a madrassa in Barpeta district, which had allegedly sheltered two Bangladeshi members of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) for four years, was demolished by the district administration on Monday.
Barpeta Superintendent of Police Amitabh Sinha had said, “Since this madrasa was built on government land, it was demolished in an eviction drive by Barpeta district administration.” Police personnel were deployed to maintain law and order.
On August 4, a madrassa in central Assam’s Morigaon area was destroyed by authorities after a teacher was detained for his alleged ties with militant organisations.
Pertinently, the Assam administration has made it necessary for imams travelling to Assam from other states to notify the local police and register on a government website.
