The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Wednesday termed the reports claiming robots will take the role of Muazzin and call the Azaan at the Grand Mosque in Makkah false.

The General Presidency of Haramain, the Saudi Arabia agency responsible for the development and administration of the Islamic holy sites of the Masjid al-Haram and the Masjid an-Nabawi, informed that the robots will simply serve as a guide in terms of information delivery.

“It has been falsely claimed by a number of media outlets that the Presidency of Haramain’s recently unveiled AI-equipped robots will take the role of Muadhin and call the Adhan in Makkah. This is incorrect; the robots will simply serve as a guide in terms of information delivery,” the General Presidency of Haramain tweeted.

Earlier in the week, various international news organizations quoting Saudi Arabia officials reported that robots will recite the Quran, sermons, and the call to prayer (Azaan) at the Grand Mosque in Makkah.

The recitations, sermons, and Azaan robots will feature at the Grand Mosque in Makkah through the work of the imam and muezzin affairs authority.

The smart robots will display barcodes enabling users to download services on smartphones. Alternatively, users can press commands on the robots to access information on prayers, imams, muezzins, and weekly schedules, including the names of clerics delivering Friday sermons, the General Presidency of Haramain informed.

The launch of the robots by the presidency is a part of a series of smart technology projects dedicated to the Two Holy Mosques to provide improved services to visitors, it said.
