Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday claimed to have booked four notorious drug peddlers under PIT NDPS act in Awantipora besides arresting a drug peddler along with a huge quantity of contraband substance in Budgam.

In Awantipora, Police have booked four notorious drug peddlers under PIT NDPS act after obtaining formal detention orders from the competent authority, a police spokesman said in a statement.

The four notorious drug peddlers have been identified as Bakhtawar Ahmad Makroo son of Late Ab Rahim Makroo resident of Gulzapora Batpora, Manzoor Ahmad Bhat son of Late Abdul Ahad Bhat, Ab Qayoom Bhat son of Late Abdul Khaliq Bhat, both residents of Larkipora Padgampora and Tariq Ahmad Mir son of Late Abdul Gani Mir son in law of Mohd Ahsan Mir resident of Kawani Awantipora.

“It is pertinent to mention that the above drug peddlers were involved in NDPS cases registered in various Police Stations of Police District Awantipora and were promoting drug abuse trade by supplying drugs to local youth. Despite their involvement in many FIRs, these drug peddlers did not mend their activities and were again promoting drug abuse trade by supplying drugs to local youth.”

Subsequently, the cases were duly processed and after obtaining sanctions from the competent authority, the arrested drug peddlers were detained under PIT NDPS act, police said.

Meanwhile, in Budgam, a Police party of PP Hardipanzo during area domination at Waragam Beerwah, intercepted a suspicious person who on seeing the police party tried to flee from the spot but was apprehended tactfully.

He has been identified as Tariq Ahmad Malik son of Ali Mohammad Malik resident of Waragam Beerwah. During the search, a huge quantity of contraband (39 Charas sticks) weighing 1.045Kgs were recovered from his possession. He has been arrested and shifted to a police station where he remains in custody, police said.

Accordingly, police said that a case under FIR number 169/2022 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Beerwah and an investigation has been initiated.

Meanwhile, police urged people to come forward with any information regarding drug peddling in their neighbourhood.

“Persons found indulging in drug peddling will be dealt with as per law. Our consistent actions against drug peddlers should reassure the community members that we are making efforts to keep our society free from the scourge of drug menace,” the statement added.
