The Myanmar military carried out an air-strike on a prominent training facility for pro-democracy fighters near the Indian border, landing at least two bombs within Indian territory, news website The Guardian has reported.
As per a report by journalist Aakash Hassan and Hannah Ellis-Petersen, a rebel commander said that the Myanmar government, which took control in a coup in February 2021 and is currently involved in a violent conflict to put down pro-democracy rebels, started attacking Camp Victoria on Tuesday afternoon.
Camp Victoria is the headquarters of the Chin National Army (CNA), an ethnic armed group that is engaged in combat with other rebel organisations to reestablish democracy in Myanmar (PDF). Just a few kilometres separate the training camp from the Indian border in Mizoram.
Locals on the Indian side in Farkawan village, located in the state of Mizoram, were quoted by Guardian saying that two bombs were dropped on the India side of the border but no one was hurt.
The explosions were confirmed by the president of Farkawan village council on the Indian side. He claimed, the blast produced “panic” in their village and dread of other strikes violating the border.
“A truck from our side was damaged by one bomb, which was parked near Tiau river,” he told the guardian. “Some people from Myanmar side have crossed over the border after the bombing and people in our village are helping them and the injured. We could see that the bombing was carried out by three fighter jets and two helicopters.”
There was no immediate comment from the military or government media.
Indian authorities did not confirm whether bombs were dropped inside Indian territory.
