After Joshimath, cracks in houses widen 82 km away in Karnaprayag
Cracks in the roadways and fissures in the walls of homes in Karnaprayag, 82 kilometres away from Joshimath, have largely gone undetected at a time when the ground subsidence in Joshimath town has drawn the attention. At Bahuguna Colony in Karnaprayag, more than two dozen homes have developed fractures that began appeared roughly ten years ago, newspaper Indian Express reported.
Now when the fissures and breaches are broad and long enough, the owners and renters of several homes must vacate. Others who were unable to find alternate housing on their own are spending the night in the shelter run by the local authorities.
As per a report by journalist Anaveesh Mishra, following the disaster at Joshimath the government is providing a sum of Rs 1.5 lakh apiece as emergency assistance and compensation to the afflicted families.
Out of this, Rs 50,000 would go towards helping families relocate, and Rs 1 lakh will be given as an advance on compensation.
“So far, orders have been issued to dismantle two hotels in Joshimath, as these two buildings are posing threat to other structures in the area. No other structure is being demolished as of now. A survey is being conducted of the affected structures. People are being shifted to safer places. An interim help of Rs 1.5 lakh is being provided to the affected families. Out of this, Rs 50,000 (provided by the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority) is for the families to shift to other places and their immediate needs, and Rs 1 lakh as an advance amount to the total relief compensation to be given,” officials told newspaper Indian Express.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who visited Joshimath again on Wednesday, appealed to the people to not believe in rumours regarding the demolition of houses.
The CM gave the Chief Secretary orders to make sure that no house is torn down unless it is absolutely necessary. He said that 3,000 impacted households have received a grant of Rs 45 crore, and that a rehabilitation strategy is in the works.
86 homes have been deemed to be in a “danger zone,” and 723 homes in Joshimath have already developed cracks, according to a bulletin published by the Chamoli district administration. 499 people in total, representing 145 families, have been moved to temporary shelters.
