6.2 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia’s Sumatra

On Monday morning, an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck Northern Sumatra in Indonesia.

According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was recorded at a depth of 80 km. No tsunami alert was issued and there were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties.

Last week a powerful 7.7 earthquake struck the Tanimbar region in Indonesia, with tremors felt in Darwin in the Northern Territory.

The earthquake hit in the same region of Aceh as the extremely powerful Indian Ocean 2004 Boxing Day tragedy.

That quake set off a tsunami which killed more than 230,000 people in a dozen countries, most of them in the Aceh province.
