Shab-e-Baraat prayers barred at Jamia Masjid in Srinagar, gate locked: Anjuman Auqaf
Srinagar: Authorities have barred Shab-e-Baraat prayers at the Jamia Masjid in Kashmir, the Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid said on Tuesday.
The officials have locked the gates barring thousands from praying at the main mosque of the region, it said.
“Authorities disallow Shab-e-Baraat Prayers at Jama Masjid Srinagar. Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid informed that concerned police and administration officials came to Jama Masjid Nowhatta and locked the gates of the Masjid at 5.30 pm informing the Anjuman that as per the orders of DC Srinagar no Shab-e-Barat prayers will be allowed to take place at Jama Masjid today,” Hurriyat Conference said in a tweet.
“Anjuman strongly protests the highhandedness of the authorities and calls it blatant interference and violation of our religious rights,” the tweet mentioned.
Earlier in the day, the Anjuman had said that Isha prayers will be offered at historic Jamia Masjid Srinagar at 10:00 pm.
Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid had said that after Isha prayers, night-long prayers will start in the mosque.
The Anjuman had also demanded the release of chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who continues to remain under house detention since August 5, 2019.
Earlier on March 4 statement, Anjuman said that it expresses resentment as important events like Shab-e-Baraat is not being held.
The Anjuman head Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq continues to be under “illegal and arbitrary” house detention since 5 August 2019, it said.
The Anjuman statement also mentioned that there are strict restrictions on the peaceful activities of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir as he is barred from performing his religious responsibilities, which is condemnable.
