Gulmarg: In a canine attack that happened in Gulmarg on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, 22 sheep were killed by the ferocious dogs.

The flock of about 1500 sheep belonging to 20-25 different families were attacked in the night.

About 50 sheep were killed while about 40 were injured. From the herd, 20 sheep are still missing.

While speaking to the team of veterinary doctors from Sheep Husbandry Baramulla, Free Press Kashmir learnt that about 22 sheep were injured critically in the incident and 20 had minor injuries that were treated on spot.

“A team of ten members including paramedics and veterinary surgeons and assistant surgeons reached the spot at about 7 am and provided the required treatment to the livestock,” an official from the department said.

The families looking after the private livestock said that a pack of about 40-50 wild dogs came in the night and attacked the flock.

Locals have said it is unusual for wild dogs to be in this area.

The locals have also alleged that the dogs from villages are being brought into the forest areas and that puts human lives at risk and has led to this incident.

Meanwhile, Free Press Kashmir tried to contact DC Baramulla to speak about the incident but received no response.

Locals have alleged that Gulmarg has seen a spike in canine population as dogs from the city are being brought to the forest areas.

They have said that more such attacks can happen if the concerned authorities do not take any action.
