Cuba has agreed to host a Chinese “eavesdropping facility” that would allow Beijing to intercept electronic communications from the United States, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

Unnamed US officials claimed the deal has so far been reached in principle and that China paid Cuba “several billion dollars.”

The facility would enable China to gather information about a number of US military bases across the southeast of the country, as well as about the US ship traffic, the report said.

According to the sources, as quoted, China could gain access to a “range of communications, including emails, phone calls and satellite transmissions.”
