Kanpur: A first information report (FIR) has been registered against 40 unidentified Muslims in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, for offering nimaz on the streets on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha.
The case was filed as devotees did not follow the government order restricting the Muslims to offer nimaz on road, police said.
Police are trying to identify those involved with the help of photographs and videos.
According to police, of the many people who went to offer prayers at the Eidgah Masjid in the Jajmau area of Kanpur on Thursday, some reached too late, and so, they decided to sit on the road and offer namaz.
A Maktoob Media report stated that these people offered namaz on the road after reaching late for prayers at the Eidgah Masjid in Kanpur’s Jajmau area.
Brajnarayan Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kanpur, said an FIR was registered against 40 unidentified persons under IPC sections 186 (obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 283 (danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint).
The case was lodged at Jajmau police station.
Earlier in April on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr three separate FIRs were lodged in Kanpur against more than 1,000 unidentified persons and an Eidgah committee over the offering of namaz on roads.
