In response to Supreme Court of India’s judgement upholding the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, China underscored the necessity of resolving the Kashmir issue through dialogue and consultation between India and Pakistan.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, addressing a question from a Pakistani journalist, reiterated China’s consistent and unequivocal stance on the matter, said a report by PTI.
Mao emphasised that China’s position on the Kashmir issue is rooted in principles outlined in the UN charter, UNSC resolutions, and relevant bilateral agreements.
According to Mao, the longstanding dispute between India and Pakistan is a historical issue that should be appropriately addressed through peaceful means. In alignment with international norms, Mao urged relevant parties to engage in dialogue and consultations, underscoring the crucial role of preserving peace and stability in the region.
The Supreme Court of India, in its unanimous decision, not only upheld the GoI’s decision to abrogate Article 370 but also directed the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir “at the earliest.” Additionally, the court mandated the holding of elections to the assembly by September 30 of the following year.
Mao stressed that the Kashmir dispute is a residual issue from the past, and its resolution should adhere to international norms and agreements. The spokesperson called on all concerned parties to work towards a resolution through peaceful dialogue, reinforcing the commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
Meanwhile, Pakistan, a steadfast ally of China, promptly rejected the legal validity of India’s Supreme Court verdict, asserting that the international legal framework does not recognise New Delhi’s perceived “unilateral and illegal actions” of August 5, 2019.
This assertion adds another layer to the complex geopolitical dynamics surrounding the Kashmir issue, emphasising the divergent perspectives of key stakeholders in the region.
