Pakistan voting: Shehbaz Sharif, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari ‘agree to unite’, says report

Shehbaz Sharif

Shehbaz Sharif, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan and brother of Nawaz Sharif, has collaborated with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari of the PPP to establish a coalition government, Pakistan media reported.

This move comes as election trends indicate that no single party is obtaining a clear majority. Despite Independents supported by Imran Khan making significant progress in the national elections, they are falling short of the required 133 majority mark.

The elections in Pakistan took place on February 8 amid a blackout of mobile services.

In a highly contentious election marked by delays, violence, and accusations of fraud, former Pakistani prime ministers and arch-rivals Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan have both declared victory, setting the stage for a turbulent political landscape.

Independent candidates backed by Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party secured the majority of seats, showcasing a strong performance despite Khan being incarcerated. The imprisoned leader’s influence was evident as his endorsed candidates emerged victorious in various constituencies, signaling a resilient base of support for the PTI.

On the other hand, Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) party emerged as the largest single party, gaining significant traction in the polls. However, the victory is clouded by delayed results and allegations of fraud, casting a shadow over the legitimacy of the electoral process.

The election was marred by incidents of violence perpetrated by armed groups, raising concerns about the safety and security of the electoral process. The atmosphere of fear and intimidation in certain areas further fueled doubts about the fairness of the elections.

Moreover, a widely criticized suspension of mobile phone services during the polling day prompted accusations of “political engineering” aimed at manipulating the outcome. Critics argue that the move hampered communication and hindered the ability of voters to stay informed, undermining the democratic process.

International observers have expressed their reservations about the conduct of the election, urging Pakistani authorities to address the allegations of fraud and ensure transparency in the electoral process. The uncertainty surrounding the results has added to the already tense political climate in the country.

As both Sharif and Khan claim victory, the nation watches with bated breath, uncertain about the direction in which the political landscape will unfold. The aftermath of this controversial election is likely to be a critical juncture for Pakistan, determining the future course of its political stability and democratic institutions.
