New Delhi: Home minister of India Amit Shah on Monday assured representatives from Leh and Kargil that the government of India is committed to providing necessary Constitutional safeguards for the Union territory (UT) of Ladakh.
He said GoI will continue to engage with them on measures to protect its unique culture and language; ensure the region’s inclusive development as well as employment generation; and also empower the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Councils.
Shah, during deliberations with a six-member delegation of the Apex Body, Leh (ABL) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), said the high-powered committee (HPC) on Ladakh constituted recently to examine the demands of ABL and KDA has been discussing the modalities for providing Constitutional safeguards for Ladakh.
The consultative mechanism, established through the high-powered committee, has been working actively with the ABL and KDA representatives and significant progress has been made, the home ministry shared in a statement on Monday.
“A sub-committee constituted by the HPC is also actively engaged with the ministry of law and other experts,” Shah said.
The second meeting of this sub-committee was held on Monday with the participation of ABL and KDA representatives. Senior officers of MHA, department of legal affairs and legislative department were also present.
“Various issues pertaining to land, employment and constitutional safeguards progressed for the benefit of the people of Ladakh,” a home ministry spokesperson said.
