Rajouri: A woman allegedly killed her eight-day-old newborn daughter by leaving her in a nearly dry pond under direct sunlight, leading to the baby’s death from heat, hunger, and thirst in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, officials said on Monday.

On Sunday, police received a report about an infant’s body found in a nearly dry pond in Kadma Prat village, Sunderbani tehsil, and quickly sent a team to recover it, oofficials told PTI.

During the investigation, the mother, Sharifa Begum, accused the father, Mohammad Iqbal, of the crime.

However, officials found that Iqbal had left for Kashmir at the time of the incident.

This led investigators to focus on the mother, who was subsequently detained for questioning.

“She broke down during interrogation and confessed to the crime,” an official said.

Officials revealed that Sharifa had a confrontation with Iqbal and, to settle scores, she murdered the infant by leaving her in a dry pond under direct sunlight and then blamed him.

A case of murder and other offences has been registered against Sharifa at the Sunderbani police station, and further investigations are ongoing, they said.
