Certain provisions don’t seem appropriate: Karnataka Home Minister on new criminal laws

Karnataka Home Minister, G Parameshwara.

Says government of India must consider inputs from states like Karnataka

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara stated on Tuesday that a debate is needed on various aspects of the three new criminal laws replacing the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Addressing reporters, Parameshwara said, “There are many factors to discuss in the new criminal laws. Not everything is wrong; there are also good provisions. The British-era laws have been amended, and the new laws aim to address contemporary challenges.”

He added, “However, certain provisions don’t seem appropriate. Discussing them could create controversy. Previously, cases could be registered, but now there’s no provision for that. This needs to be debated.”

Parameshwara further explained, “We’re arresting individuals and taking legal action, but the new law requires releasing the accused while the investigation is ongoing. Additionally, cases can’t be registered in certain matters. These aspects need discussion, and we’ll inform the Central government for necessary corrections.”

He said that the government of India must consider inputs from states like Karnataka.

In Karnataka, 66 cases have been registered under the new law by Monday 10 pm., including 20-25 cases in Bengaluru. He acknowledged that it may take one to two months for the staff to adapt to the new laws.

Regarding Rahul Gandhi’s controversial speech, Parameshwara, said, “The BJP won’t understand Rahul Gandhi’s mind and statements and will remain confused. Rahul Gandhi clearly stated that Hinduism is a religion that inclusively embraces all sections of people. Those opposed to this are not Hindus. This applies to individuals with that mentality, and if it applies to the BJP, so be it.”
