Tribunals uphold ban on Geelani’s Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and Muslim League JK

New Delhi: Two judicial tribunals have upheld the government’s decision to ban two Jammu and Kashmir-based groups, including Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.

The tribunals, led by Delhi High Court Judge Sachin Datta, confirmed the designation of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat as an outlawed group under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on June 22.

This group was founded by the late separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

Similarly, the tribunal confirmed the ban on the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction) under the same act.

The Home Ministry of India announced that Tehreek-e-Hurriyat was declared unlawful on December 31, 2023, with the tribunal established on January 16, 2024. The confirmation of the declaration was issued on June 22, 2024.

In a separate notification, the home ministry stated that the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction) was declared unlawful on December 27, 2023, with the tribunal set up on January 15, 2024. This declaration was also confirmed on June 22, 2024.
