Srinagar: Body of a non-local resident was recovered from river Jhelum near Qamarwari area of Srinagar on Friday, officials said.
An official told the news agency Kashmir News Observer that the body was recovered by river police Srinagar near cement bridge Qamarwari. Police have taken cognisance of the matter.
Kashmir is experiencing a worrying surge in drowning incidents this year, with 35 cases reported between January and July 2024.
This represents a significant increase compared to the same period last year, which had 22 incidents. Data reveals that the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has conducted 73 rescue operations so far this year.
The peak occurred in June 2024, with 11 drownings reported, contrasting sharply with 2023’s total of 48 drowning incidents and 92 rescue operations for the entire year.
