The United States has advised its citizens to avoid traveling to Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, the India-Pakistan border, and certain parts of central and eastern India where Naxalite activity is present.
In a revised travel advisory for India, the State Department updated information regarding the northeastern states.
“Exercise increased caution in India due to crime and terrorism. Some areas have increased risk,” the advisory stated.
India has been designated as Level 2 overall, but certain regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, the India-Pakistan border, Manipur, and parts of central and eastern India, are categorised as Level 4.
“Do not travel to: The union territory of Jammu and Kashmir (excluding eastern Ladakh and its capital, Leh) due to terrorism and civil unrest; within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border due to the risk of armed conflict; parts of central and eastern India due to terrorism, and Manipur due to violence and crime,” the State Department specified.
Furthermore, the advisory suggested that Americans reconsider travel to the northeastern states because of terrorism and violence.
“Indian authorities report that rape is one of the fastest-growing crimes in India. Violent crimes, such as sexual assault, have occurred at tourist sites and other locations. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist areas, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and government facilities,” the advisory noted.
