Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha recently unveiled the logo, website, and teaser for the inaugural Kashmir Marathon, set to take place on October 20 in Srinagar.
During his address, Lt Governor Sinha congratulated the J&K Tourism Department and all stakeholders involved, inviting runners from around the world to participate and experience the unique charm of Jammu and Kashmir.
“We aspire to make this event a beacon of peace and harmony,” said the Lt Governor.
He expressed confidence that the Kashmir Marathon will place J&K firmly on the global running map, enhancing its recognition as a premier tourist destination.
The marathon is the latest in a series of high-profile events in J&K, following the successful F4 racing event in Srinagar, the Sunburn Music Festival in Jammu, and the J&K Tourism Development Conclave recently held in Srinagar.
The Lt Governor also hinted at the possibility of organizing an annual ‘Jammu Marathon’.
Highlighting the socio-economic impact of the marathon, the Lt Governor noted that the event will boost local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and souvenir shops, contributing to the region’s prosperity.
He emphasized that sports have long been a powerful bridge connecting diverse cultures and languages. The Kashmir Marathon will integrate cultural events, performances, and exhibitions to showcase Kashmir’s rich heritage, enhancing the experience for all participants.
“Kashmir Marathon is not just a race but a celebration of resilience, beauty, and the unbreakable human spirit. It will also celebrate our breathtaking scenery and promote eco-friendly tourism that benefits local communities,” said Sinha.
The Lt Governor commended the efforts of the UT Administration, under the leadership of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, to revolutionise the sports sector in JK.
He urged the youth of J&K to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the government in sports and other sectors and become the brand ambassadors of J&K.
The Kashmir Marathon will feature two categories: a full marathon of 42 kilometers and a half marathon of 21 kilometers. The proposed route will take runners through some of the region’s most picturesque landscapes, including Chinar trees, Mughal gardens, and the serene Dal Lake.
The event was attended by Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Advisor to the Lt Governor; Atal Dulloo, Chief Secretary; RR Swain, DGP; Yasha Mudgal, Commissioner Secretary, Tourism; and senior officers of the civil and police administration. Padma Shri Chewang Motup Goba, Founder & Race Director of Ladakh Marathon, along with prominent sports personalities and a large number of youth, were also present.
