Gujarat: Heavy rain and flooding in Gujarat have caused parts of a road leading to the Statue of Unity to be washed away.

Massive cracks appeared on the highway near the Rajvi crossing on Dabhoi road on Wednesday, August 28, prompting authorities to close the road to the public, according to the Times of India.

This route is heavily trafficked by visitors heading to the Statue of Unity. The damage appears to have been caused by overflowing water from the Dhadhar river, which led to portions of the road being swept away.

While the other side of the road remains open for commuters, local residents pointed out that the damaged road was constructed only a few months ago, as reported by the Times of India.

The Statue of Unity, symbolising the unification of India post-Independence, was unveiled by Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on October 31, 2018, in honour of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 143rd birth anniversary. Standing at 182 meters (597 feet), it is the tallest statue in the world.
