Israel must exercise restraint in response to Iran’s provocations: Biden

US President Joe Biden has firmly stated that he opposes any Israeli attempts to strike Iran’s nuclear sites as tensions between the two nations rise.

Speaking from Air Force One while travelling to inspect hurricane damage in the Carolinas, Biden emphasised that while Israel has the right to respond to provocations, any retaliation must be proportional.

This comes after Iran’s recent rocket attack on Israel, causing minimal damage. Despite bipartisan pressure, the Biden administration has yet to tighten sanctions on Iranian oil exports.

Meanwhile, military analysts, such as Richard Goldberg, urge the US to increase missile defence support for Israel and consider stronger actions against Iran’s missile infrastructure and nuclear facilities.

Tensions have escalated further following Israel’s recent assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut, part of a broader offensive that included the killing of key leaders of the Iran-backed Lebanese militia. Goldberg suggests that Iran’s leadership may now feel increasingly vulnerable, sensing a shift in Israel’s strategy toward more aggressive measures aimed at destabilising the Iranian regime.
