Budgam: Thousands of people gathered in Magam town of Central Kashmir’s Budgam, to protest the recent killing of Hezbollah leader Syed Hassan Nasrullah in an Israeli airstrike and people in Gaza and Lebanon.
The peaceful rally, which began at the Petrol Pump Magam and concluded at Eid Gah, saw participants from various areas condemning Israel’s actions and expressing solidarity with the Palestinians, local news agency Kashmir News Trust reported.
In Gaza, over 41,000 people have lost lives in Israeli attacks in less than a year.
Dr Shafi Ahmad Wani, a former MLA and current candidate for the Beerwah Assembly Constituency, joined the rally.
He labelled, Israel as a “terrorist country” that will soon face the consequences for its actions. He said Israel will disappear from the political map of the world for killing innocent people.
A shutdown was also observed in Magam and surrounding areas, commemorating the fourth day (Chahrum) of Nasrullah’s passing, KNT reported.
The Hezbollah leader was killed on Saturday and he was laid to rest a day later.
The people, including men, women and children, assembled on the main roads – carrying black flags – and held protests against the killing, the news agency PTI reported quoting officials as saying.
The protestors were chanting anti-Israel and anti-US slogans, denouncing Nasrallah’s killing in Israeli airstrikes, they said.
The protests were by and large peaceful even as a large posse of police personnel maintained vigil to ensure that the demonstrations did not turn violent, the officials told the Delhi-based news agency.
Meanwhile, the shops in Magam market and Budgam town were shut, the officials said. However, the situation was peaceful, the officials informed PTI.
