Iltija Mufti accuses NC workers of vandalism in south Kashmir; NC denies allegations, threatens legal action
Srinagar: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti has accused National Conference (NC) workers of engaging in violent acts, including vandalism, arson, and intimidation, following NC’s recent electoral victory in Bijbehara and surrounding areas of south Kashmir.
Mufti alleged that PDP members in Bijbehara, Kheram, Dachnipura, and Wagama faced property destruction, cowshed fires, and livestock theft. She warned that further violence would lead to immediate legal action, stating, “We may have lost the election, but we will not tolerate this atmosphere of intimidation.”
In response, NC MLA Dr Bashir Veeri strongly refuted the accusations, labelling them baseless and politically motivated. He expressed disappointment over Mufti’s remarks and hinted at legal action against her for making false claims. “I have great respect for Mehbooba Mufti, who is like a sister to me, but I advise Iltija to stop making these baseless and illegal accusations,” Veeri stated.
He added, “The National Conference has a long-standing legacy in Bijbehara. This has always been our stronghold. Your grandfather never won against my father, and after 28 years, we have restored that legacy. Such accusations tarnish our history, and I will not allow that.”
“We respect the democratic process, but we will defend our reputation through legal means if needed,” he said.
