With independent support, NC secures majority in JK assembly
Srinagar: The National Conference (NC), which emerged as the largest party in the recent Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections by winning 42 of the 90 seats, has now secured a clear majority.
The party gained backing from four Independent MLAs—Pyaray Lal Sharma (Inderwal), Satish Sharma (Chhamb), Choudhary Mohammed Akram (Surankote), and Dr Rameshwar Singh (Bani). This support has pushed NC’s total to 46 seats, exceeding the majority threshold.
As a result, NC’s reliance on its pre-poll allies, Congress and CPI(M), has diminished. Congress, which secured only 6 seats, finds itself sidelined, no longer holding a decisive role in government formation.
Independent MLA Pyaray Lal Sharma, while pledging his unconditional support to NC, emphasised that he has always been aligned with NC despite running independently, and he continues to trust its leadership.
In addition, Independent candidate Muzaffar Iqbal Khan, who won the Thannamandi seat, has also extended his support, bringing NC’s tally to 47 seats, solidifying its position to form the government without further alliances.
