‘Retaliation for Beirut strike’: Hezbollah drone hits Israeli base, kills 4 IDF personnel
US says it will send a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery to assist Israel
Israel’s military reported that four IDF personnel were killed and seven others seriously injured in a drone attack by Hezbollah on an Israeli army base near Binyamina. Hezbollah claimed responsibility, stating that the attack was in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on Beirut that left 22 dead and over 100 injured last Thursday.
Israel’s rescue services confirmed that 61 people were wounded in the attack, with several in critical condition. All injured were transported to hospitals for treatment.
According to Israeli media, two drones were launched during the attack, with Israel’s anti-missile system intercepting one. However, the second drone was not intercepted, though the reason remains unclear.
In response to escalating tensions, the US announced earlier on Sunday that it will send a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery to assist Israel, along with personnel to operate it, following an Iranian missile strike nearly two weeks ago. The Pentagon did not specify when the system would arrive.
Hezbollah and Israel have been exchanging fire across Lebanon’s border for over a year, but the conflict has sharply intensified since September.
