On Friday, Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq stated the Hurriyat’s willingness to engage in dialogue with the BJP-led government of India to address the Kashmir issue.
He remarked, “When the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) was founded in 1993, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir was vastly different, with militancy at its peak. Even then, the APHC’s stance was for a peaceful resolution through engagement, and after 30 years, this position remains unchanged.”
Speaking to the Friday congregation at the Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta, the Mirwaiz referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent remarks at the BRICS Summit, where he advocated for dialogue and diplomacy, not war, as the path to resolving conflicts.
The Hurriyat has previously engaged in discussions with former prime ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Manmohan Singh, and former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf, and the group remains open to engaging with the current leadership in New Delhi.
“The bloodshed in Kashmir has gone on too long and must end,” he added.
Srinagar: The Mirwaiz also called for investigations into the recent attacks in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal and Baramulla districts.
On Sunday, a local doctor and six non-local laborers were killed by militants at a tunnel construction site in Ganderbal’s Gagangir area, while an attack in Baramulla’s high-security Gulmarg area on Thursday left four people, including two soldiers, dead.
“These recent killings are deeply troubling and require serious investigation,” he said.
