Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon under ceasefire deal: Report

Israeli strikes damage infrastructure in Lebanon significantly.

The draft ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, revealed Wednesday by Israel’s public broadcaster Kan, reportedly stipulates that Israel would withdraw from southern Lebanon within one week of the agreement’s signing.

This withdrawal would see the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), supported by international oversight from the United States and other bodies, assuming control of the region.

Drafted by US diplomat Amos Hochstein and currently under review by Israel’s political establishment, the agreement includes several measures aimed at stabilizing southern Lebanon.

A key component is the full enforcement of UN Resolution 1701, which mandates that Hezbollah and other armed groups in the area cease hostilities against Israel. Instead, security responsibilities would fall solely to the LAF, working alongside UNIFIL.

Furthermore, the draft specifies that Israel would halt offensive operations in Lebanon, including actions targeting military and government sites.

It also outlines Lebanese government supervision over all weapons sales and production within its borders to prevent unauthorised militarisation.
