Moradabad: Protests erupted in Moradabad’s upscale TDI society over the sale of a house by a resident to a Muslim doctor.
According to a PTI report, residents raised slogans after learning that Dr Ashok Bajaj sold his property to Dr Ikra Chaudhary. Demonstrators gathered at the colony’s gate, holding banners demanding, “Dr Ashok Bajaj, take your house back.”
A protester told PTI, “This is a Hindu society with over 400 Hindu families. We don’t want other communities living here,” citing the house’s proximity to a temple. Amit Verma, chairman of the TDI City Society, joined the protests.
Some residents expressed concerns about the sale altering the colony’s character. One resident feared demographic shifts, saying it could lead to “unwanted changes” if other communities started settling and Hindus began leaving. Another, quoted by Times of India, stressed the importance of maintaining the existing system, suggesting the property be sold back to a Hindu. Pallavi, a resident, warned of significant changes if Hindus moved out.
District Magistrate Anuj Kumar Singh confirmed receiving a complaint from the society members opposing the sale. He said efforts were underway to find an amicable resolution.
This incident comes amid recent communal tensions in Uttar Pradesh. On November 24, violence erupted in Sambhal during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) survey of a Mughal-era mosque, reportedly built on the site of a Harihar temple. The clashes resulted in five deaths and injuries to several people, including police personnel.
