Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of the Allahabad High Court sparked a heated debate on Sunday by attending a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) event, where he made polarising remarks about India’s majority community and the Muslim population.

In his speech, Justice Yadav stated that India would operate according to the will of the majority, emphasising that their welfare supersedes others. He further remarked that cultural practices rooted in compassion and non-violence shape the majority community, contrasting them with those of Muslims, whom he accused of lacking similar values due to practices like animal slaughter.

He used the controversial term “kathmullah” to describe Muslims, claiming they posed a threat to the country’s progress and harmony.

Speaking on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Justice Yadav criticised practices like polygamy, triple talaq, and halala within the Muslim community, asserting that such traditions violate constitutional principles and must be abolished. He affirmed that a UCC was imminent and described it as necessary for the nation’s unity and equality.

He praised Hindu traditions and emphasised that anyone who respects the culture, deities, and great figures of India, regardless of religious beliefs, could be considered a Hindu in spirit.

Justice Yadav also referenced the Ayodhya verdict, honouring the sacrifices of ancestors who dreamed of a Ram Temple and calling for the continuation of efforts to protect cultural and religious values.

The judge concluded by asserting that non-violence and kindness are hallmarks of Hinduism but should not be mistaken for weakness. He urged individuals to prioritise their identity as Hindus while striving to make India a global leader, echoing the vision of Swami Vivekananda.

The comments have drawn sharp criticism, raising questions about the impartiality expected of a sitting judge.
