Fatehpur: Local administration in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur have initiated the demolition of the 180-year-old Noori Masjid, built in 1839, citing it as an encroachment.
Officials claim the mosque obstructs a road and have deployed bulldozers to clear the site, despite the mosque predating the road it is alleged to encroach upon.
Authorities argue that the mosque qualifies as an unauthorised construction. “This action aligns with regulations to remove encroachments affecting public infrastructure,” stated a district official, as reported by The Observer Post.
The demolition has ignited anger amongst local residents and activists, who emphasise the mosque’s historical and religious significance. Protesters accuse the authorities of disregarding cultural heritage and have called on the government to explore alternative solutions.
As bulldozers move in, the demolition of this historic mosque raises urgent questions about balancing development and preserving cultural landmarks in India’s evolving urban landscape.
