Srinagar: The cold wave tightened its grip on the Kashmir Valley on Friday, with the meteorological department predicting light rain in Jammu’s plains and snowfall in the higher reaches of the region over the next 24 hours.

Farmers and orchardists remain concerned about the prolonged dry spell, which threatens the Rabi crop and apple production prospects for 2025 due to insufficient precipitation.

Temperatures plummeted across the region, with Srinagar recording a minimum of minus 7.3°C, Gulmarg at minus 6°C, and Pahalgam at minus 8°C. In Jammu, the night’s lowest temperatures were 8°C in Jammu city, 7.4°C in Katra, 2.1°C in Batote, minus 1.8°C in Banihal, and minus 0.6°C in Bhaderwah.

The ongoing ‘Chillai Kalan,’ the harshest 40-day winter period, is critical for replenishing Jammu and Kashmir’s water reservoirs, which sustain rivers, lakes, and springs through the summer. A snowless winter raises concerns over severe water shortages in the months ahead.

Doctors have advised the elderly and children to stay indoors during sub-zero temperatures and wear adequate winter clothing to prevent frostbite, hypothermia, and respiratory issues. The traditional ‘Pheran’ and the portable ‘Kangri’ firepot remain popular among locals for staying warm during the severe cold.
