The head of UNRWA, the UN agency aiding Palestinian refugees, has warned that an Israeli law set to take effect in two days will severely impact its operations, threaten the ceasefire, and hinder Gaza’s recovery and political transition.
UNRWA, the primary aid distributor in Gaza, provides essential services such as education and healthcare. However, Israel accuses the agency of harbouring Hamas-linked staff, diverting aid, and allowing its facilities to be used for military purposes—claims UNRWA has consistently denied.
The agency’s chief emphasised that a ceasefire should lead to an organised political transition, with UNRWA’s services being gradually transferred to capable Palestinian institutions. This approach is being pushed by a coalition led by Saudi Arabia, the European Union, and the Arab League.
