Article 370 was temporary and transitional because it was linked to promise of plebiscite: Omar Abdullah

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in a TV interview, questioned the narrative around Article 370 being temporary and transitional.

He challenged the selective interpretation of its nature, pointing out that the provision was linked to a larger political commitment—the promise of a plebiscite made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

“You talk about Article 370 being temporary and transitional. But why was it temporary? What was the transitional status linked to? Why don’t you talk about that? A promise of plebiscite was made to the people of J&K,” Omar Abdullah said during the interview on February 25, 2025.

Article 370 granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, allowing it to have its own constitution and autonomy in most matters except defense, foreign affairs, finance, and communications.

The abrogation of Article 370 in 2019 by the Indian government reignited these discussions, with many questioning whether the move disregarded historical commitments.
