Civilian shot dead in Kupwara, officials say

Armed forces deployment in north Kashmir.

Kupwara: A 43-year-old social activist was shot dead by unidentified gunmen late Saturday night in the Kandi Khas area of Kupwara district, Jammu and Kashmir.

The assailants entered his residence and opened fire, inflicting bullet wounds to his abdomen and left wrist, Indian Express reported.

The victim Ghulam Rasool Magray was initially taken to a nearby hospital and later referred to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital in Srinagar, where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to officials, Magray was a social activist, though the motive behind the attack remains unclear. The incident has heightened tensions in the region, which is already on high alert following the recent Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in 26 fatalities.

In response to the Pahalgam attack, armed forces have intensified operations across the Kashmir Valley, targeting suspected militant hideouts and demolishing properties linked to militant operatives.
