‘We thought it was the end’: Passengers recall horror as IndiGo Delhi-Srinagar flight hit by hailstorm

The aircraft, operating as IndiGo flight 6E 2142 (registration VT-IMD), encountered bad weather en route to Srinagar and was declared an “Aircraft on Ground” (AOG) after landing.

Srinagar: On Wednesday, IndiGo flight 6E2142 from Delhi to Srinagar went through a scary experience when it was caught in a hailstorm mid-air. The storm caused strong turbulence and damaged the nose of the plane.

There were 227 passengers on board, including several Members of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Many of them described the experience as terrifying.

Sheikh Samiullah, a startup founder from Srinagar, said the pilot warned them about rough weather around 20 minutes before landing and asked everyone to fasten their seatbelts. “Within two minutes, the plane started shaking badly. People thought it might crash. Everyone was scared,” he said. He also thanked the pilot.

TMC MP and journalist Sagarika Ghose, who was on the same flight, called it a “near-death experience.” “People were screaming, praying, and panicking. I thought my life was over,” she said.

Amid the panic, the flight crew stayed calm and managed to land the plane safely at Srinagar Airport around 6:30pm. Thankfully, no one was hurt. The plane has now been grounded for inspection and repairs.

Videos shared online showed how frightened the passengers were, with many screaming and praying as the plane shook violently.

IndiGo released a statement saying they are committed to passenger safety and follow all proper procedures.
