Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that senior Hamas leader Mohammed Sinwar was killed in a recent Israeli airstrike in Gaza, effectively confirming his death.
Addressing parliament, Netanyahu named Sinwar among the Hamas figures eliminated in Israeli operations.
Mohammed Sinwar was the brother of Yahya Sinwar, a key architect of the October 7, 2023, attack and Hamas’s top leader, who was killed by Israeli forces last year.
Mohammad Sinwar had long been part of Hamas’s military wing and was considered one of its most senior commanders. After Yahya’s death, he rose further in the ranks, becoming a key figure in Hamas’s leadership, reports said.
Mohammed Sinwar was born in 1975 in the urban Khan Younis refugee camp. His family was among hundreds of thousands of Palestinians driven from what is now Israel during the 1948 war surrounding its creation. The refugees and their descendants today make up the majority of Gaza’s population, France24 reported.
