Comedian Daniel Fernandes served legal notice over Pahalgam attack satire; refuses to take video down

Stand-up comedian Daniel Fernandes has received a legal notice from two lawyers linked to the Supreme Court over his recent comedy video titled The Kashmir Terror Attack.

In the video, released in May, Fernandes uses satire to comment on media narratives, public reactions, and social media discussions following the terror incident in Pahalgam, Kashmir.

The notice accuses Fernandes of making light of a national tragedy and includes demands to take down the YouTube video by June 3 and delete a related post on X from April 14, which the complainants say hurt cultural sentiments.

In response, Fernandes shared the notice publicly on social media, along with a detailed caption defending his act. He argued that his content is meant to question how people and media respond to such events, not to insult victims. He said satire and comedy should be allowed to express difficult truths, adding, “Art — no matter how provocative — should be allowed to exist.”

He also compared his situation to global trends where voices are being silenced, whether it’s students in the U.S. speaking about Palestine or comedians in India facing backlash.

Fernandes has refused to take down the video and stressed that all statements in his act fall under satire and social commentary.

His stand has drawn support from the comedy and creative community, with many speaking out in favour of artistic freedom. He ended his note with a request for support, saying, “Should this matter escalate further, I hope you will stand by my side — loudly.”
